Chaldean Church delegation meets al-Sistani to build peace in the country

by Dario Salvi
We both know that the country is sick but want to find the medicines to treat it, says Emmanuel Delly.

Baghdad (AsiaNews) – "It was a very cordial meeting, like between brothers who love each" and the discussion touched upon what to do "treat a sick country," Chaldean Catholic Patriarch Emmanuel Delly said in a telephone interview with AsiaNews. He was referring to a meeting between a Chaldean delegation and ayatollah al-Sistani.

"Yesterday, we went to visit him at home in Najaf. Al-Sistani warmly welcomed us and we talked about the situation in Iraq. Together, we are trying to find ways to achieve peace."

What are your impressions of the meeting?

I am very satisfied and he, too, was very happy. Let us hope that it will bear the desired fruit. As the Holy Father said this week, we are working for peace by our actions and our prayers. We know that the Pope never stops thinking about Iraq.

Who initiated the meeting?

We asked if we could meet him and al-Sistani readily said yes. He welcomed us very warmly and received us for an hour. At the end, he could not hide his satisfaction about the meeting.

What did you discuss?

Both of us want to find ways to bring peace and tranquillity to the country. We both know that the country is sick but want to find the medicines to treat it. We spoke as two brothers who love each other would.

How do you see the future?

All we can do is pray that the Lord show us the path to peace. We must also further encourage those who are working hard to establish security and stability in the country.

Can you confirm that Iraqi Prime Minister Allawi will meet with the Pope?

Hopefully, the meeting is scheduled for next week. Everything is being done for the good of the country so that it may be at peace. Starting with the Holy Father, we wish to thank all those who are working for peace and security in Iraq.
