Card. Zen: “Love life, a duty for Chinese society”
Hong Kong (AsiaNews) – Human life “is the fruit of love and grows in the warmth of a family this is why the diocesan synod of Hong Kong have decided to dedicate next year too, to the defence of this social cell, a duty which must not be limited to Catholics, but which must be extended to society at large”. Thus writes card. Joseph Zen Ze-kiun, bishop of the territory, in his pastoral letter for Advent entitled “Love life, a Gift of God”.
When we look at the origins of life, continues the cardinal, “We have even more reason to adore the wisdom of the creator. He has created man and woman, so that when they offer themselves to each other in the most total and exclusive act of love, they become also co-operators with God in bringing new lives on earth”.
Despite this, “It is no mystery for those who dare to face reality, that in this, our city, the high rate of divorce, the easy access to abortion procedures and the low birth-rate are cause for much worry about our future. The Diocesan Synod paid much attention to this sad reality and proposed to intensify pastoral care to the extent of establishing a new diocesan commission, the Pastoral Commission for Marriage and the Family”.
This commitment concludes card. Zen, “must not limit itself to the Catholic community, but must embrace all of society. The Gospel of life is for all: are the light of the world and the salt of the earth. We must spread the message of love from the rooftops, if we do not shout out our convictions; the message of the Gospel may be silenced”.
