Bomb in Guwahati, seven dead twelve seriously wounded

Police hunt for the authors of the attack, even if suspicions point to Ulfa militants.

Guwahati (AsiaNews) – A highly explosive bomb was detonated this morning close to a paediatric hospital in the Athgaon area of the eastern Assam state capital.  Police have confirmed seven dead and 12 gravely injured.

The gravity of the explosion is due to the type of bomb used : a combination of explosives strapped to a gas tank.  The police so far have made no arrests, but they suspect Ulfa separatist involvement.

In recent months these militants, have launched a campaign of small sporadic attacks, aimed at reminding state leaders that the peace process cannot begin without formal recognition of Assam’s independence from India.

With this la test explosion a new charter has been opened.  Upon till now attacks had been limited to the northern parts of the state.
