Ban Ki-moon in favour of recognition of a Palestinian state
The United Nations Secretary-General during a visit to South Pacific: "I support the Palestinian state, an independent and sovereign State of Palestine". The proposal will be put forward during the reopening of the General Assembly in September. A U.S. envoy sent to Abbas to try to stop the initiative at the last minute.
Canberra (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, traveling in the South Pacific has reaffirmed his support for a two-state - two- peoples solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In ten days time the proposal for the recognition of a Palestinian state will be presented to the UN assembly. Meanwhile, U.S. envoy David Hale has been sent to Ramallah for talks with Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas and to try to convince him not to continue with the initiative for the recognition of an autonomous state.
The United States will use its veto at the Security Council over recognition. But it is likely that the Palestinian Authority proposal will be approved by the Assembly. Ban Ki-moon has said: "I support the Palestinian state, an independent and sovereign State of Palestine". Ban Ki-moon said that President Obama has set a good framework for peace negotiations, but that it falls to UN member states to decide on a possible recognition. "So let them make the decision whether or not to recognize the Palestinian state."
Representatives of various Palestinian factions yesterday delivered a letter to Ban Ki-moon asking him to support the request to accept a Palestinian state as a full member of the United Nations, a gesture that was interpreted as the start of 'initiative, by the Palestinian Authority. The Palestinian Authority has denied that the message was an official request to the UN to recognize a state on pre-1967 borders, it stated that the factions agreed to deliver the letter as evidence of popular support for the request.
