Attacks in Jakarta: suspicions focus on Jemaah Islamiyah

The police announce they are close to the identifying the two suicide bombers. Meanwhile, the identities of 9 victims begin to emerge: the bodies of three businessmen, two Australians and one from Singapore are recognised. Added to these a New Zealand citizen who died from his wounds.

Jakarta (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The Indonesian police are now closer to the identification of the two suicide bombers who yesterday detonated bombs at the Marriott Hotel and the Ritz Carlton.

So far there has been no claim of responsibility for the attack, but suspicions are focused on the terrorist group Jemaah Islamiyah (JI). The dynamics of the two explosions are unusual compared to other terrorist attacks in the past leaving possibilities wide open. Some analysts note however that only JI has the skills and connections necessary to put into action bomb attacks in heavily supervised places such as the two hotels hit yesterday.

Investigators are now focusing on investigations of human remains found on the scene of explosions and examining a closed circuit video from the Marriot of a person who enters the hotel's restaurant with a suitcase and a backpack shortly before the explosion.

Meanwhile, the identities of the 9 victims of the bombs are beginning to emerge. The police have made no official announcements yet and have not confirmed the number of foreigners on the list of dead. Sources within the security forces declare that, so far, the bodies of three businessmen, two Australians and one from Singapore have been identified. Added to these, a citizen from New Zealand who died from his injuries.
