Arab League condemns the crimes in Gaza and throws it’ weight behind Abbas
Gaza (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Arab nation foreign ministers today condemned the recent clashes in the Gaza Strip and have called for support for the President of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas.
The politician’s Fatah faction was thrown from Gaza by militants from the rival party, Hamas: in the course of the battle for sovereignty in the Strip at least 100 people were killed. After talks in Cairo, members of the League called on both parties to cease hostilities and cooperate. Khaled Meshaal, Hamas leader in exile in Syria, distanced himself from his party’s line and defined Abbas as “the legitimate Palestinian president”.
Arab League spokesman, Amr Moussa, said: “there must be an immediate and full halt to the violence in Gaza. We are seeking a national unity in Palestine and we stand against the events that we have witnessed in the last days”.
The Lebanese situation was also among issues under discussion at the League meeting, but without common consensus on solutions to the problem being found.
