The decision applies to an eight-lane highway between New Delhi and Gurgaon where waiting gate time can reach 20 minutes per vehicle. More than 200,000 vehicles travel the 25 km each day. Operator says it is impossible to build new gates.

New Delhi (AsiaNews/Agencies) - If a traffic category existed, India would already be in the Guinness World Records. Because of high traffic volumes, a judge suspended for two weeks toll collections on a superhighway connecting the capital, Delhi, with the suburb of Gurgaon. The goal is to ease congestion. Every day, it can take up to 20 minutes to clear toll gates.

In its ruling on Tuesday, the Punjab and Haryana High Court said the operator had two weeks to comply with its earlier order of finding a solution to traffic congestion.

The court told Delhi-Gurgaon Super Connectivity Limited (DSCL) to deploy more people to manage the traffic. In its defence the operator said and it is unable to put up more gates to collect toll because of the unavailability of land.

Nearly 200,000 vehicles take the eight-lane, 27-km expressway, which opened in 2008, every day.

With around 4.32 million kilometres of roads, India had the third largest road network in the world in 2011 after the United States and China. However, only half or 2.1 million is paved.
