White smoke, new pope elected

White smoke billowed from Sistine Chapel chimney at 7.06 pm.

Vatican City (AsiaNews) - Cardinals elected a new pope at 7.06 pm. The bells of Saint Peter's Basilica rang out festively, confirming the election of a new bishop of Rome.

When the white smoke began coming out, a chorus of tens of thousands of people in Saint Peter's Square, waving flags from every continent, shouted their joy.

TV networks from everywhere stopped normal broadcasting to report the news. On Twitter, the hashtags #fumatabianca and #HabemusPapam topped all others.
