Taiwanese company unveils a new microchip for 5G: Huawei under siege

According to Mediatek, the microchip will allow access to the ultra-fast smartphone connectivity. This comes as Huawei has gone to court to be allowed to sell its 5G systems in countries where they are banned. The Chinese company won a court case in Sweden, but Swedish regulators blocked the 5G spectrum auction.

Taipei (AsiaNews) – MediaTek yesterday unveiled a microchip that will allow 5G technology in all types of smartphones.

With the new microchip, the Taiwan-based hi-tech company intends to provide faster connectivity to a larger audience.

According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, Taiwan is the world's leading microchip manufacturer after the US with a share of around 10 per cent.

Last July, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen announced that her government will invest more than US$ 700 million over the next four years to develop 5G networks.

However, there is no room in this plan for China’s Huawei, which according to experts has developed the most advanced fifth-generation systems in the world.

Chunghwa Telecom and Taiwan Mobile, Taiwan’s first and second largest telecom companies, are using 5G technology from Finland’s Nokia for ultra-fast connectivity.

Recently, many countries have given up on Beijing's 5G system, especially after the Trump administration imposed a ban on Huawei for spying on behalf of the Chinese government,

However, the Chinese tech giant has gone to court in countries where it is being boycotted, achieving a first positive result in Sweden.

On Monday, a Swedish administrative court allowed Huawei to take part in a national 5G spectrum auction.

Sweden’s Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) announced the ban last month ahead of a 5G spectrum auction scheduled for this week. It asked all bidding companies to remove equipment and infrastructure from Chinese-based companies Huawei by January 2025.

As a result of the court decision, Sweden’s telecoms regulator has halted a national 5G spectrum auction.

China has repeatedly criticised Sweden for its hostility to China’s 5G, warning that the ban on Huawei would have a negative impact on the activities of Swedish companies present in China.
