Eight communities celebrate the Week for Christian Unity

by Melani Manel Perera
A group of Apostolic Carmelite nuns stress the importance of meeting and praying year round, not just one day. The religious function is held in Sinhalese, Tamil and English.

Colombo (AsiaNews) – The National Christian Council and the Commission for Ecumenism and Dialogue of the Roman Catholic Church organised a special evening in Colombo to mark the end of the 44th Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. “One in the Apostles, teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread and prayer” (Acts’ 2:42-47) was this year’s topic.

Representatives of eight Christian communities were present at the ceremony, which was held at the Methodist Church in Kollupitiya. Prayers were said in Sinhalese, Tamil and English.

For a group of Tamil and Sinhalese Carmelite nuns who took part in the event, only through praying every day rather than meeting and praying one day a year will “unity and prayer be strong among us”.

In addition to Catholics from the dioceses of Colombo, representatives of the Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church, Baptist Church, the Church of South India, church of Ceylon Kurunegala, Dutch Reformed Church and the Salvation Army took part in the event.
