教宗解释说：「基督徒传统一直认为圣伯多禄和圣保禄是分不开的：的确，他们一起是代表了整个基督的福音；在罗马，他们的连系，象征在信仰中成为兄弟，一起获得特别意义。的确，这城市的基督徒团体视他们为一种抗衡罗马神话中的罗穆卢斯和瑞摩斯兄弟，他们被称为罗马的创始人。

他续说：「伯多禄和保禄是两个非常不同的人，尽管二人之间有矛盾，但表明了这是作为兄弟的新方式。他们按照福音生活，是一种借着基督福音的恩宠临在他们身上而成就的方式。」

教宗说：「只有跟随耶稣，才能融入这个新的兄弟情谊。这是今天庆典给予我们每人首要和基本的讯息，就是追求完全共融。这也是宗主教和罗马主教，以至所有基督徒都盼望的事。」

目前，与东正教（及圣公会）的对话停滞。

教宗本笃十六世阐释今天的福音（玛窦福音16:13-19），强调伯多禄（教宗）的角色。相比次下，当耶稣预示他的苦难、死亡和复活，西门伯多禄的人性反应，开始劝他说，这决不会发生在你身上（16:22）；耶稣反过来回答：「撒殚，退到我后面去！你是我的绊脚石，因为你所体会的，不是天主的事，而是人的事。」（16:23）
