WYD: young Asians preparing to leave for Krakow

More young Asians are expected in Krakow than in Rio in 2013. Catholic Philippines will provide the largest contingent, some 1,500, followed by South Korea’s 800, which will include eight Laotians met during Asian Youth Day 2014.

Krakow (AsiaNews/ÉDA) – Asian youths will be more numerous at the 31st World Youth Day in Krakow than at the previous edition in Rio de Janeiro.

A total number is not available because of political or economic factors that prevent some from participation and the lack of data from some Churches.

However, Églises d'Asie expects the number of young Asians to be substantial higher than the small group that travelled to Rio for World Youth Day in 2013.

The largest group, about 1,500 young people, will come from Catholic Philippines, followed by 800 from South Korea. The latter will include eight Laotians met during Asian Youth Day 2014 (pictured) who stayed in touch.

Indonesia should provide a contingent of 170 people, followed by 150 from India, 120 from Japan and 140 from Taiwan. Many will come from Hong Kong, but their numbers are not yet available. Many mainland Chinese Catholics are expected to “mingle” unofficially with them and with the Taiwanese.

Each Asian delegation has its own plans beyond the five-day WYD.

Several groups plan to travel to important places in Poland, like the shrine in Czestochowa and Auschwitz.

One Taiwanese group – which is expected to include six underground mainlanders – plans to travel to Taizé to spend several days with the local community.

Some Hong Kong groups plan to travel to Hungary or the Czech Republic; one wants to go to Assisi and Rome.
