US visas blocked for Chinese who oppress Uyghurs. Beijing: Interference
Those affected by the restrictions include Xinjiang party secretary Chen Quanguo, responsible for the detention of over one million Uyghurs and Kazakhs. Trade with public security offices and various Chinese companies that collaborate in surveillance, detention and repression of Muslims in Xinjiang is forbidden.
Beijing (AsiaNews) - China has denounced the United States for wanting to "interfere" in its internal affairs, after Washington decreed a restriction on visas for Chinese Communist Party and government officials who "are responsible or complicit in detention or abuses of Uyghurs, Kazakhs or other members of minority groups in Xinjiang ”.
For the Chinese embassy in Washington the restrictions "seriously violate the basic norms that govern international relations, interfere in China's internal affairs and undermine Chinese interests".
The US State Department has not released the list of visa-blocking names. But it's almost certain that the list includes Chen Quanguo, a member of the Politburo and party secretary in Xinjiang. He is responsible for the detention in forced labor camps of about one million Uighurs, which Beijing however defines as "vocational training centers", which aim to re-educate the Muslim population of Xinjiang and eradicate "Islamic radicalism" and "terrorism" .
Only a small fraction of the population demands the independence of the region, but Beijing submits all to a regime of strict military control and colonization through Han immigrants, oppressing religious freedom. For several years, Chen Guangguo's policy has been a "scorched earth" policy for Uyghurs.
In addition to visa restrictions, on 7 October the US also announced a list of Chinese companies and 20 public security offices in Xinjiang that are prohibited from trading because they are responsible for surveillance, detention and repression.
The US decision takes place a few days after the China-US dialogue on the trade war, which will resume tomorrow in Washington. For the Chinese Foreign Ministry, the US move is "an excuse" to put pressure on these talks. In any case, in the US these positions are appreciated both by members of the Republican Party and by the Democratic Party.
