Typhoon Yagi devastates northern Vietnam with US$ 3.31 billion in damages,

VIETNAM
Typhoon Yagi, the strongest to hit Asia this year, has caused huge damage, mainly in northern Vietnam, estimated at around US$ 3.31 billion, twice as much as initially thought. This comes on top of the human toll, 299 dead and 34 missing, as well as the devastation wrought to factories and large swathes of farmland.
JAPAN
Japan's next prime minister, Shigeru Ishiba, wants to appoint Shinjiro Koizumi, a rival in the leadership race, as head of the party's election committee. Koizumi, a former environment minister and son of a former prime minister, came third among the nine candidates in the Liberal Democratic Party poll. One of the new prime minister’s first steps was to announce an early election, which must held within 13 months.
PHILIPPINES
The Philippine government unveiled a plan to start up commercial nuclear power plants with a minimum capacity of 1,200 megawatts by 2032, Philippine Energy Department Undersecretary Sharon Garin announced at the IAEA General Conference in Vienna. The Southeast Asian country aims to gradually boost atomic energy capacity to 4,800 megawatts by 2050.
NEPAL – INDIA
The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu and Nepal’s Ministry of Federal Affairs and General Administration signed memorandum of understanding yesterday. The 12 high-impact community development projects are worth approximately US$ 3.5 million, and cover education, health, agriculture, and drinking water as well as the construction of school buildings, health centres, and a water supply system.
SOUTH KOREA
The Homeless World Cup 2024, now in its 19th edition and running from 21 to 28 September, closes today in Seoul. About 500 athletes, men and women, divided in 64 teams representing 49 countries, were present. For the first time, the tournament was held in Asia. In the opening match, South Korea beat Germany 4-nil. According to 2021 data from the World Economic Forum, 150 million people were homeless in the world.
RUSSIA – MIDDLE EAST
Iran's Energy Minister, Abbas Aliabadi, has proposed connecting Russia's electricity grid with those of the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia through its territory. The goal is "the preservation of the environment and raising of energy security levels", passing through land borders with more sustainable investments in "BRICS candidate countries".
CHINA – UKRAINE
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with his new Ukrainian counterpart Andrei Sibiga in New York at the UN General Assembly. The senior official noted that "Beijing and Kyiv are linked by a traditional friendship and have long maintained a strategic partnership.” He is confident that the current crisis can be overcome and practical cooperation re-established.
