The new auxiliary bishop of Dhaka, ‘together to serve everyone’
Pope Francis appointed Fr Subroto Boniface Gomes, the current parish priest of Tejgaon, to work alongside Archbishop Bejoy Nicephorus D'Cruze. Ordained a priest on 16 April 1990, the new prelate will fill a post that became vacant in 2021.
Dhaka (AsiaNews) – Pope Francis yesterday appointed Fr Subroto Boniface Gomes, parish priest in Tejgaon, as the new auxiliary bishop of Dhaka
“We have exciting pastoral news!” said last night Archbishop Kevin Stuart Randall, Apostolic Nuncio to the country, as he announced the news in the Tejgaon church.
“His Holiness Pope Francis has granted an Auxiliary Bishop to the Archdiocese of Dhaka in order to assist its Metropolitan in the fruitful exercise of his ministry in leading, teaching and sanctifying,” apostolic nuncio added. “The Pope has designated, therefore, one of your parish priests to help in this mission. His name is Fr Subroto Boniface Gomes.”
The Archdiocese of Dhaka was without an auxiliary bishop since 13 May 2021. Bishop-elect Gomes will work alongside Archbishop Bejoy Nicephorus D'Cruze, who is 68 years old and has led the local Church since 2020.
Born on 19 November 1962 in Rangamatia, Fr Gomes attended the Intermediate Seminary of Saint Joseph in Dhaka, and was awarded a Bachelor of Arts from Notre Dame College in Dhaka.
He subsequently studied philosophy in Bengaluru (Bangalore) and theology in Dhaka, followed by a licentiate in philosophy from the Pontifical and Royal University of Santo Tomas.
Subroto Boniface Gomes was ordained a priest on 16 April 1990 and after his ordination he served as deputy parish priest at the Holy Rosary in Dhaka from 1990 to 1993.
After two more years studying in Manila, he taught logic at Notre Dame College in Dhaka until 2003 and at Holy Spirit Major Seminary, from 2004 to 2007. After that, he became deputy secretary general of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Bangladesh until 2015 when he was appointed parish priest in Golla.
He later served as spiritual director of the Holy Spirit Major Seminary, Dhaka (2017-2018), and chancellor of the archdiocese of Dhaka (2018-2019). Since 2020 he has been the parish priest of Santo Rosario, Dhaka.
The new bishop is also dean of studies of the Holy Spirit Major Seminary in Dhaka, editor in chief of the Theological Journal, secretary of the Fraternity of Diocesan Priests of Bangladesh, a member of the Regional Planning and Evaluative Committee of Caritas in Bangladesh, and director of various archdiocesan commissions.
