Singapore Airlines offers unpaid leave to avoid redundancies

The company urges crews to go on voluntary no-pay leave for three months starting in September. Singapore Airlines lost more than US$ 260 million in the past year. Prior to this proposal, CEO Goh Choon Phong had announced redundancies.

Singapore (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Singapore Airlines (SIA), known world-wide for the quality of its services, has invited cabin crews to go on a voluntary no-pay leave programme for three months starting in September to address a “temporary crew surplus situation”.

The SIA Group employs about 25,800 people. SIA alone employs about 14,800 staff, of which 8,200 are cabin crew.

“The division will need to exercise flexibility and nimbleness to better manage crew resources,” SIA said in a notice.

“VNPL and the leave buy-back scheme are measures that the division will take from time to time to achieve this objective,” it added.

Last year, SIA lost more than US$ 260 million, a situation that pushed management to cut costs deeply.

The measure can be seen as an attempt to save jobs, following SIA’s CEO Goh Choon Phong’s June statement about job cuts.
