Russian deacon accused of terrorism for social support to Ukraine

Today's news: The World Bank cuts China's growth estimates; The US sends bombers and fighter jets to the Korean peninsula;  Malaysia's Ibrahim government wins a vote of confidence; Iran increases uranium enrichment; India offers wheat to flour and biscuit producers to cool prices; Kazakh dissident arrested.

RUSSIA

The deacon of the Russian Orthodox eparchy of Vyatka, Dmitry Baev, was put on the list of "terrorists and extremists" for spreading false information about the Russian Armed Forces. According to the authorities, he is motivated by 'political, ideological, racial and religious hatred motives'. On his social account VKontakte he had posted a series of posts in support of Ukraine.

CHINA

The World Bank cut Chinese growth estimates. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the real estate crisis, the country's GDP is set to fall to +2.7% by the end of 2022 (the June forecast put it at +4.3%). Growth is also declining next year: from an initial forecast of 8.1% to 4.3%.

US-COREA

After the satellite and missile test carried out in recent days by Pyongyang, the United States sent B-52 bombers and F-22 fighter jets to the region for joint military exercises with the Seoul Armed Forces.

MALAYSIA

Prime Minister-designate Anwar Ibrahim won a vote of confidence yesterday at the opening of the national parliament. The executive is supported by five political forces, including coalitions and individual parties. The parliamentary vote puts an end to the debate on the legitimacy of the new governmental structure.

IRAN

Tehran is enriching 'worrying' amounts of uranium: 18 times as much as the 2015 international agreement, says the International Atomic Energy Agency. The highly enriched uranium is used to make nuclear devices. 

INDIA 

Although its reserves are at a six-year low, the Indian government will offer 2-3 million tonnes of wheat to wheat and biscuit producers. The aim is to cool prices after the surge due to the war in Ukraine and the negative effects of this year's high temperatures on crops. 

KAZAKHSTAN 

In Almaty, police raided the home and arrested the activist of the civil movement 'Oyan, Qazaqstan', Bejbarys Tolymbekov, an exponent of popular opposition to the corruption of the ruling caste. The arrest took place without explanation; his phone was also blocked.
