Pope: final preparations for the beginning of the Synod on the Amazon

Vatican City (AsiaNews) - Final preparations are underway for the beginning of the Synod on the Pan-Amazon region, scheduled for October 6 to 27, in the Vatican. A bishop of PIME, Msgr. Giuliano Frigeni, bishop of Parintins (Brazil) will be attending.

In the words of Pope Francis on October 15, 2017 in announcing the assembly "The main purpose of this convocation is to find new ways for the evangelization of that portion of the People of God, especially the indigenous, often forgotten and without a perspective of a good future, also for the cause of the crisis of the Amazonian forest, lung of fundamental importance for our planet”.

The Amazon is in fact a territory extended between nine countries and inhabited by 34 million people, of which over three million are indigenous, belonging to more than 390 ethnic groups and it is fundamental for the very existence of life on our planet, as home to more than a third of forest reserves.

114 of the 185 members of the Synod come from the Amazon.

Presidents delegate to the assembly were appointed by Francis: They are three cardinals, the Venezuelan Porras Cardozo, the Peruvian Barreto Jimeno and the Brazilian Braz de Aviz.

The general speaker will be Card. Cláudio Hummes, OFM., archbishop emeritus of São Paulo (Brazil), president of the Episcopal Commission for the Amazon of the National Conference of Bishops of Brazil, president of the Panamazzonica Ecclesial Network (Repam)

Special secretaries will be Father Michael Czerny, SJ., under-secretary of the migrants and refugees section of the Dicastery for the service of integral human development and Msgr. David Martínez de Aguirre Guinea, OP.., titular bishop of Izirzada, Apostolic Vicar of Puerto Maldonado (Peru).
