Pope: PIME’s Father Carlo Salerio to be raised to the altars
Born in Milan in 1827, he took part in the Five Days of Milan. Missionary in Oceania, he founded the Sisters of Reparation upon his return to Italy.
Vatican City (AsiaNews) – The cause for the beatification of Father Carlo Salerio of PIME is underway. Pope Francis authorised the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints to issue the decree that recognises his heroic virtues.
Born in Milan on 22 March 1827, he entered the Seminary of the Archdiocese of Milan in 1839 where he completed his classical studies, followed by philosophy studies at seminary Monza. He was still a seminarian when the Five Days of Milan broke out in 1848.
Carlo was among those who treated the wounded and gave shelters to those forced from their homes. He also helped his comrades build a barricade and with some took part in the siege of Mantua as the standard-bearer of the ‘Student Battalion’, which also included seminarians from Lodi, Bergamo, Como and Cremona.
Ordained a priest in 1850, he was admitted to the newly-founded Seminario lombardo per le Missioni estere (Lombard Seminary for Foreign Missions), the precursor of the Pontifical Institute for foreign Missions (PIME), and left for Oceania.
Forced to return home because of illness, he realised he had a new mission: setting up a group of young people, led by Carolina Orsenigo, to offer charity to the poorest and most abandoned, in particular women and girls, to mend the evil done by men. The group later took the name of Sisters of Reparation.
Father Carlo died in Milan, at the headquarters of the Lombard Seminary for missions, on 29 September 1870.
In addition to the decree dedicated Father Carlo Salerio, Pope Francis authorised the publication of the decrees concerning:
- the miracle, attributed to the intercession of the Blessed Giuseppina Vannini (born Giuditta Adelaide Agata), foundress of the Daughters of Saint Camillus. Born in Rome (Italy) on 7 July 1859, she died there on 23 February 1911;
- the miracle, attributed to the intercession of Blessed Dulce Lopes Pontes (born Maria Rita), of the Congregation of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God. Born in São Salvador da Bahia (Brazil) on 26 May 1914, she died there on 22 May 1992;
- the miracle, attributed to the intercession of the venerable Servant of God Lucia of the Immaculate (born Maria Ripamonti), a professed nun of the Institute of the Handmaids of Charity. Born in Acquate (Italy) on 26 May 1909, she died in Brescia (Italy) on 4 July 1954;
- the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Giovanni Battista Pinardi, titular bishop of Eudoxiade and auxiliary bishop of Turin. Born in Castagnole Piemonte (Italy) on 15 August 1880, he died in Turin (Italy) on 2 August 1962;
- the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Dominic Lázaro Castro, a professed priest of the Society of Mary. Born in San Adrian de Juarros (Spain) on 10 May 1877, he died in Madrid (Spain) on 22 February 1935;
- the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Salvatore da Casca (born Erminio Pinzetta), professed religious of the Order of Friars Minor Capuchin. Born in Casca (Brazil) on 27 July 1911, he died in Flores da Cunha (Brazil) on 31 May 1972;
- the heroic virtues of the Servant of God Maria Eufrasia Iaconis (born Maria Giuseppina Amalia Sofia), foundress of the Congregation of the Daughters of the Immaculate Conception. Born in Casino di Calabria, now Castelsilano (Italy) on 18 November 1867, she died in Buenos Aires (Argentina) on 2 August 1916.
