Pope: Christians are not weak, uniform thinkers, but free thinkers that comes from being “on God’s side"

"What path does the Lord want us to travel? Always that of the spirit of intelligence to understand the signs of the times . It is good to ask the Lord Jesus for this grace, to send us the spirit of understanding, that we are not weak thinkers, uniform thinkers who satisfy our own tastes: that our thoughts are according to God. "

Vatican City ( AsiaNews) - Christians do not follow weak , uniform thoughts wanted by the "spirit of the world", but the free thoughts "of men and a women who are part of God's people". Pope Francis said in his homily at Mass celebrated this morning in Casa Santa Marta.

The Pope, Vatican Radio reports, centered his reflection on "thinking in Christian." Those who follow Jesus , he noted, not only thinks with his head, but also with his heart and "the spirit within him ." Otherwise you can not understand "God's path through history" :

"In the Gospel , Jesus did not get angry, but he pretends to be when the disciples did not understand things . To those of Emmaus says : ' O foolish men , and slow of heart ' . 'O foolish men, and slow of heart ' ... Those who do not understand things God is a person like this. The Lord wants us to understand what happens , what happens in my heart, what's going on in my life , what happens in the world, in history ... What is this happening now? These are the signs of the times ! Instead , the spirit of the world makes us other proposals, because the spirit of the world does not want us as a people: it we want us to be an unthinking mass, without freedom. "

The spirit of the world " wants us to travel a uniform path", but, as St. Paul warns, "the spirit of the world treats us as if we did not have the ability to think for ourselves; it treats us like people not free":

"Uniform thinking, the same, weak way of thinking, a widespread way of thinking. The spirit of the world does not want us ask ourselves before God : ' But why this, why that, why does this happen?'. Or, it offers us a prêt-à -porter thought, designed according to our own tastes : ' I'll think what I want! .' But that 's okay , they say ... But what the spirit of the world does not want is what Jesus asks of us: free thought , the thought of a man and a woman who are the people of God and this is our salvation! Think of the prophets ... ' you were not my people , now I call you my people ': says the Lord . And this is salvation: to make us a people, God's people, to have freedom".

"And Jesus asks us to think freely, to think in order to understand what happens." The truth is that "we alone can not ! We need the help of the Lord." We need "to understand the signs of the times" and "the Holy Spirit gives us this gift, a gift: the intelligence to understand and not because others tell me what happens" :

"What is the path the Lord wants us to travel? Always with the spirit of intelligence to understand the signs of the times. It is good to ask the Lord Jesus for this grace, to send us the spirit of understanding, so we do not become weak, uniform thinkers who would satisfy their own tastes: that we think only according to God. With this thought, which is a thought of the mind, heart and soul. With this thought, which is a gift of the Spirit, we search for the meaning of things and seek to understand the signs of the times".

This is the grace that we ask the Lord for today: "The ability that the Spirit gives us" to "understand the signs of the times".
