Pope Francis in Taiwan TV series

The 13-part series will be produced in the fall and immediately broadcast on a national TV network.

Taipei (AsiaNews) – A fundraising dinner for a TV first series on Pope Francis saw a large turnout in Taiwan. The 13-episode series will be produced this fall and will air on a national TV network.

"We started fundraising in January with promotional activity in all major parishes in northern Taiwan,” said Dean Ferng (馮益峰 秘書), secretary of the Kuangchi Program Service’s fundraising team (光啓 社).

“Pope Francis is so famous and so unique,” Ferng added, “that the idea immediately sparked a great deal of enthusiasm, starting with Archbishop John Hung Shan-chuan (紅 山川 總 主教) and parish youths."

For Wang Ilary (王小姐), responsible for the local pastoral youth ministry, "Everyone deserves to know Pope Francis in greater depth. When it comes to a leader who knows how to get in touch with people, Pope Francis is such a rare yet formidable example. It is not surprising to see all the enthusiasm he can generate.”

At dinner, the archbishop stressed Pope Francis’ great contribution to the mission to the marginalised and to those who consider themselves far from the Christian community.

"At the local level, the initiative by Kuangchi Program Service and the national TV network is a very exciting thing for us,” he said, “because it allows us to reach an audience that would otherwise be beyond our range of contacts."

Mr Zhang (外交部 歐洲 司司長 張銘 忠) is in charge of the European desk at the Foreign Ministry. He attended the dinner and stressed the importance of Pope Francis, and of his example as someone who is in touch with people's real needs.

Jessica Chuang (莊麗紅 社長) chairs Kuangchi Program Service. “This is just the beginning,” she said. “In a few weeks, we have two more events in the south of the island with an even greater number of donors.”

“In addition, young people and Catholic teenagers will develop a plan to reach the largest number of viewers among their peers. This is what Pope Francis would want, and we want to be part of his mission.”

“My thanks go to all of you for the enthusiasm with which you have responded to this project."
