Philippines, Robredo to close campaign at site where Marcos arrested opponents

The other news of the day: North Korea launches new missile while Yoon sets conditions for summits with Kim. China’s youth unemployment reaches 16 per cent. Israel is set to approve 4,000 new housing units a month before Biden's visit. Three Kyrgyz who crossed into Uzbekistan to collect material for farm work are killed.

PHILIPPINES

Leni Robredo, Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr’s main challenger in next Monday’s Philippine presidential elections, plans to hold her final rally in Manila, at the intersection of Ayala and Makati Avenues, where people were arrested in 1983 for protesting against dictator Ferdinand Marcos, father of the current frontrunner, following the assassination of his main opponent Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino.

SOUTH KOREA

South Korea's new President Yoon Suk-yeol, who takes office next Tuesday, said he was willing to meet with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un but only if talks produce tangible results on North’s denuclearisation or cross-border exchanges. Meanwhile, South Korean authorities reported this morning that North Korea fired a new short-range rocket, probably another ballistic missile, from a submarine. The weapon, the fifteenth launched since January, ended up in the sea.

CHINA

Young people are paying the price for China's economic slowdown. In 2022, a record 10.76 million students are expected to graduate, but with fewer job prospects than in previous years. The unemployment rate among 16- to 24-year-olds hit 16 per cent in March and could reach 20 per cent in the summer.

RUSSIA

Russian coal exports fell by 5 per cent in March due to the war in Ukraine, with imports by Europe dropping by more than half. Yet coal prices tripled due to the disruptions caused by Western embargo and Asia’s failure to increase its imports from Russia.

KYRGYZSTAN – UZBEKISTAN

Three Kyrgyz, a father and his two sons, died in hospital after being shot by Uzbek border guards in the Jalal-Abad region, on the border between Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. The three had apparently crossed the border illegally to collect minerals for farm work.

ISRAEL

Israel is set to approve the construction of nearly 4,000 new housing units in the West Bank. This would be the largest housing development since US President Joe Biden took office. Biden is expected to visit Israel next month.
