A village panchayat in Uttar Pradesh is said to have ordered the inhumane treatment over an extramarital affair. Police arrested 15 people in connection with the incident.

Lucknow (AsiaNews) – Pictures of the inhumane treatment inflicted on a woman in a village in Uttar Pradesh are causing a stir in India. The woman was caught talking to her lover while her husband was away.

A video of the incident went viral after it was posted online. In it, the woman is seen tied to a tree, her hair cut, and her face darkened with black ink.

After this public humiliation, she was beaten in front of her twelve-year-old son and even younger daughters because of her relationship with a younger man.

The incident, which shows how serious and deep-rooted violence against women is in some places, took place in Chhotki Ibrahimpur, Hathigawa, a village in Pratapgarh.

The local council (panchayat) issued an order the couple be punished, but the woman’s lover managed to escape and the villagers took it out on the woman.

After he fled, the man filed a complaint at a police station with officers coming to the rescue of the unfortunate woman.

Some 15 people were reportedly arrested in connection with the affair while police have launched an investigation.
