MYANMAR
More than 6,000 civilians have been killed in Myanmar in the first 20 months since the military coup in February 2021. This is revealed in a report by the Oslo-based Peace Research Institute, which says the junta (army and police) is "the main killer" but opposition forces also have "bloody hands." At least 6,337 civilians have been killed "for political reasons" and 2,614 have been injured.
JAPAN
Japanese police arrested an 18-year-old soldier who opened fire at fellow soldiers at a shooting range, killing two instructors and wounding a third. The incident, which did not involve civilians, occurred this morning in Gifu, in the center of the country, and is the first with casualties for the Ground Self Defense Force (Gsdf) since 1984. The young man is in custody on charges of murder.
SAUDI ARABIA.
The Saudi Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources plans to attract billion in investment in the food industry by 2035. The budget will be used to support the development of the sector in the kingdom, including dairy, bakery, confectionery, and beverages. The ministry also aims to double exports from 3.7 billion in 2022 to 10.9 billion.
INDIA-PAKISTAN
Delhi and Islamabad have arranged for the evacuation of more than 40,000 people due to the arrival of Biparjoy [disaster, in Bengali], which is advancing in the Arabian Sea accompanied by winds of more than 150 km/h. The cyclone is expected to impact the mainland tomorrow between southern Pakistan and western India. At least seven casualties have already been reported to date, from collapsing walls and flooding of land.
TURKEY
The Istanbul Medical Association is sounding the alarm over the outbreak of a serious measles epidemic, with rapidly rising numbers of "worrying" proportions and which has already claimed several lives among children. Specialists appeal to families, urging them to join the vaccination campaign, and to the Ministry of Health calling for maximum transparency on data.
TAIWAN - CHINA
Taipei's military has released an updated defense manual that includes a section on how to distinguish Chinese soldiers from Taiwanese soldiers based on uniforms, camouflage and insignia. Officials said they received feedback urging better illustration of "warfare scenarios." Taiwanese soldiers are shown smiling, Chinese soldiers with upturned, stern mouths.
RUSSIA
At the EU Parliament in Brussels the elite of Russian opposition abroad, some 300 representatives including politicians, activists, economists, journalists and publicists, met in recent days. Absent were members of the Naval'nyj group, in controversy with other opponents. They were joined by Zelenskyj's former adviser Aleksej Arestovič to talk about "The Day After," transit to a democratic Russia.
KAZAKHSTAN
Kazakhstan's finance minister, Erulan Žamaubaev, announced that the presidential chancellery, a body established by former president Nursultan Nazarbaev, will be abolished. A further move to erase the former regime, which "frees up three billion tenge for the state budget" and further widens the gap with the Kremlin, which is closely tied to the eliminated structure.
