Mumbai, Laudato sì inspires the Way of the Cross: No more wasting God's gifts
The procession started from the parish of St. Andrew, in Bandra West. All 14 stations were introduced by a passage of the last papal encyclical. The parish priest: "The existence of many people depends on the ocean, which we pollute and exploit".
Mumbai (AsiaNews) – The Way of the Cross held today in the parish of St. Andrew Bandra West (Mumbai), in the year it celebrates 400 years since its foundation, was inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical Laudato sì: "This year - says the pastor Fr. Magi Murzello - the story of the Passion is associated with the degradation of the earth and the ocean in particular, given that the existence of many people depend on the ocean, such as fishermen and sailors".
The commemoration of the last days of Christ on Earth began at eight in the morning (local time) at the Holy Door of the Basilica of Mount Mary with an introductory prayer and blessing. A brief documentary was then screened to help people to meditate on the "culture of waste" and on the waste of marine resources. The first station, of the 14 total, ended with a thanksgiving to God for the goods of the Earth and a request for forgiveness for humanity’s wounding of the beauty of Creation.
The procession then left from Mount Mary, following along Chimbai beach, and culminated in front of the parish of St. Andrew for the final blessing at about 10 am. The meditations of all stations were introduced by extracts from Laudato sì.
The raising of awareness of the environment will not end with the Way of the Cross. Fr. Murzello, in fact, invited all the faithful Saturday, March 26 back to Chimbai beach, which has been flooded with waste of all kinds (see photos), to clean it.
