Seoul (AsiaNews / Agencies) - Kim Jong applauds the "impressive" efforts of South Korea as a host country for the Winter Olympics and is committed to "further easing" the "warm climate of reconciliation".
The words of the North Korean leader were reported by the state media, two days after the return of the high-level Pyongyang delegation led by Kim Yo-jong, Kim Jong-un's younger sister, and Kim Yong-nam, the country's head of state , whose role is purely representative.
Today, the Kcna state news agency published a brief report on yesterday's meeting between Kim Jong-un and the North Korean delegation, on their visit to the South between February 9 and 11.
The visit by North Korean representatives was possible thanks to the reopening of dialogue between the two Koreas, on the occasion of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics. During the three-day visit, the leaders of the two countries shook hands, appeared close to each other for the opening ceremony and at a concert by the North Korean orchestra of Samjiyon.
Kim Yo-jong also delivered a letter from her brother to South Korean President Moon Jae-in, in which he invited him to visit Pyongyang. These days, the "human face of the regime" by Kim Yo-jong has divided the South Korean and international media between hopes of reconciliation and criticism of this "charm offensive" as a way to circumvent the sanctions that the UN and the US imposed on North Korea because of its missile and nuclear program.
During the briefing with the delegation, Kim Jong-un said he was impressed and grateful by the "priority" that Seoul gave to the visit of the members of North Korea, and then added that he had given "important instructions" for the progress of the dialogue and reconciliation. According to the South Korean presidential office, the next step in inter-Korean dialogue could be a formal meeting for military negotiations.
