International Buddhist conference at Borobudur temple

Jakarta (AsiaNews) – More than 400 Buddhist monks, hailing from various countries in the world, are taking part in the International Conference on Buddhism held at the captivating Borobudur temple in Magelang, province of Central Java. The conference, organized by the World Buddhist Sangha Council (WBSC),  began yesterday and will continue until Dec. 21.

According to Sri Pannyavasa Maha Thera, WBSC president, the conference has been met with great success. Around 300 monks were expected to attend, but actually 433 arrived from all over the world –not only from nearby Asian countries, but from as far away as Bangladesh, Canada, United States and Australia. In attendance at the conference are representatives from other religions.

The purpose of the conference, as Thera explained, is to spread the message of peace throughout the world, with the hope of improving dialog between the heads of various world religions. (MH)
