Indonesia, first cabinet meeting in the new capital Nusantara

Today's headlines: Several civilians fleeing Myanmar's Rakhine state are killed in a drone strike. Court upholds one conviction involving Jimmy Lai and other pro-democracy activists in Hong Kong. Police return to work In Bangladesh.

INDONESIA

Indonesian President Joko Widodo held his first cabinet meeting in the country's new capital, Nusantara, in a likely attempt to send investors a positive signal. The mega project of almost US$ 35 billion has suffered from several delays, slowing construction, and the lack of foreign investment.

MYANMAR

A drone attack killed at least a dozen Rohingya fleeing Myanmar from Rakhine State to Bangladesh, all of them civilians, according to several witnesses. The Arakan Army, the local ethnic militia, and the Myanmar military army blamed the each. Some boats carrying refugees on the Naf river, which separates the two countries, were also hit, with dozens of fleeing civilians killed.

HONG KONG

Hong Kong's highest court, the Court of Final Appeal, has upheld the convictions of seven pro-democracy activists, including Jimmy Lai, founder of the Apple Daily newspaper, for participating in the 2019 protests and in an unauthorised assembly, charges different from those for which Jimmy Lai faces life imprisonment. The court unanimously rejected the defendants' appeal.

IRAN

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian introduced his new cabinet, proposing diplomat Abbas Araqchi as foreign minister at a time of high regional tensions that followed the killing of Hamas's political leader in Tehran. Pezeshkian's proposed cabinet must be approved by parliament. Parliamentary Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said various committees would begin vetting candidates today.

BANGLADESH

Muhammad Yunus, the new head of the new government of Bangladesh, has been acquitted of graft. Human rights advocates deemed the original charges as politically motivated by former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. After talks with Yunus, police, who had harshly cracked down on student protests, is back on the streets. Protesters had targeted at least 450 police stations out of 600 in the past few days,.

RUSSIA

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a flurry of restrictive laws in recent days, including the "repatriation regime" and registering migrants directly by law enforcement, banning frontline soldiers from using smartphones, and forcing bloggers with more than 10,000 subscribers to provide personal data to media watchdog Roskomnadzor.

ARMENIA

A series of sporting meets, recreational events, interactive discussions on healthy lifestyle, video-roll competitions, and much more was organised as part of a festival marking International Youth Day on 12 August, in the Armenia city of Gavar, proclaimed "youth capital" of 2024, as well as other cities, including the royal capital of Yerevan.
