Hong Kong, Kevin Lau’s condition improves: He is conscious and can write

Until yesterday, the doctors feared the worst, because of the severity of a deep wound in his back. The police are still on the trail of his assailants. Supporters and journalists seek greater protection for press freedom.

Hong Kong (AsiaNews / Agencies) - The conditions of Hong Kong Ming Pao newspaper former editor Kevin Lau Chun-to have improved. The journalist was stabbed last February 26 by two unknown assailants, and until recently was considered "in a critical condition" because of injuries to his back. In a press release, Lau's family said that man is now conscious and able to communicate through writing. Meanwhile, police are still investigating the attack.

"We are confident - said the family - that with your support and with his own determination Kevin will not only recover, but will continue to serve alongside his fellow journalists."

Ming Pao is a well-known Chinese language Hong Kong newspaper, highly respected for its investigative journalism . Last month, Lau was replaced as editor by a Malaysian journalist, considered a Beijing "sympathizer". This has generated concern over the newspaper's possible loss of independence.

On February 27 at least 200 people staged a vigil outside the government building to denounce the attack and call for protection of press freedom.
