New Delhi (AsiaNews) – While the world's leaders are gathered for the first time in India for the G20 summit, representatives of religions are also making their voices heard.
Since the 2014 G20, held under the Australian presidency, in conjunction with the meeting of heads of state and government, the G20 Interreligious Forum calls together representatives of the different religious communities, the academic world and civil society for a reflection common ground on major global challenges.
In India the event took place from 5 to 7 September at the World Peace Dome in Pune. Over 100 speakers and 2000 delegates took part and discussed the theme "Shaping world peace and sustainable development through interreligious harmony".
The discussion touched on a wide spectrum of topics: from the heavy legacy left by the pandemic to conflicts, from climate change to the condition of children.
Dalbir Singh, president of the One Globe Forum and national secretary of the Congress, underlined that India's rich tapestry of religions and languages is a formidable asset that can foster global harmony.
Speaking as chief guest at the inauguration he underlined the importance of understanding and respecting diversity to ensure that differences do not lead to divisions.
Msgr. Felix Machado, archbishop of Vasai and general secretary of the Indian Bishops' Conference (CBCI) spoke at the meeting on behalf of Indian Catholics: “I expect with joy and hope that peace will be at the top of the agenda - he said -. What good are good economic prospects if there is no peace in our hearts, if there is no peace in our families, if there is no peace in our society and in the world around us? In a world based on the market economy, a spirit of gratitude, dialogue and solidarity should reign."
Meanwhile, the Catholic Bishops' Conference of India (CBCI) has also released a message inviting all the Catholic communities of the country to pray for this event.
The president Msgr. Andrews Thazhath, Archbishop of Trichur, said: “As our country hosts the G20 summit, we are reminded of the ancient Indian wisdom of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam', 'one Earth, one family, one future', which underlines the interconnectedness of all living beings. This summit is an opportunity to manifest this universal truth through dialogue, collaboration and shared responsibility. It reminds us that, despite our diversity, we are bound by one human family, which shares common challenges and responsibilities".
