For pope, the Jubilee means merciful attention to the poor, the downtrodden and those tried by life
Rome (AsiaNews) – The goal of the Jubilee is to focus on the importance of service to others, especially the needy, Pope Francis said in a letter to Angelo Scelzo, deputy director of the Vatican Press Office in charge of accreditation, on the occasion of the release of his book Il Giubileo. La misericordia. Francesco (The Jubilee. Mercy. Francis).
Indeed, "The pope feels that the Holy Year is a matter of urgency for the Church of our time, which is called to go out into the edges of existence,” said the Cardinal Secretary of State Pietro Parolin.
What is more, for the Church, this is first theme-oriented Jubilee in history, Card Parolin noted. It also represents an additional step for the Church towards the existential edges of the world.
Since both Islam and Christianity see mercy is an attribute of God, this might lead to shared moments during the Holy Year for Christians and Muslims.
"I think we could find ways for the two religions to show a willingness of working together and applying this principle,” he explained.
Indeed, the Jubilee will provide an opportunity to build paths of peace at a time of terror, fear, distrust [. . .]. This is what the Lord has always told us to do, i.e. overcoming evil with goodness."
Speaking about the security arrangements in Rome before the opening of the Holy Door, the cardinal said that “concerns have been raised with respect to what has happened, but I have the impression that a certain serenity is prevailing; therefore, let us put ourselves in God's hands. Of course, as it is being done, let us also take every precaution to ensure that the event unfolds smoothly.”
The Jubilee of Mercy means merciful attention for the poor, the downtrodden, and people tried by life, the Pope wrote in his message to Angelo Scelzo, who just published a book about the pope.
In his message, the Holy Father expressed his appreciation for the illustration of mercy’s works by a disabled artist. For Francis, the choice underscores the "equal dignity of every human being" and the need to "serve others, especially the needy."
Speaking about the book, Scelzo said, "It is a good guide to follow the Jubilee, understand what it means, and keep full track of events. I think it is particularly useful. I think it is a book that can help people approach more easily this event."
