Floods displace over 35,000 in Malaysia

Today's headlines: 6 March announcement of Erdogan's presidential challenger in Turkey; Asia's largest growth in obese people by 2035; New US sanctions on Russian and Chinese entities; Modi triumphs in voting in three border states; US study: 60-70 thousand Russian deaths in Ukraine.

MALAYSIA

At least 35,000 Malaysians have had to leave their homes due to flooding caused by torrential rains in recent days. The number of confirmed dead so far is three. Johor, in the south of the country, is the worst affected state.

TURKEY

The electoral alliance formed by six opposition parties will announce on 6 March the single candidate who will challenge Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the presidential elections. Despite the effects of the recent earthquake that claimed more than 45,000 lives in the country, the government confirmed the vote on 14 May.

ASIA

By 2035, half of the world's population will be classified as 'obese' or 'overweight'. Along with Africa, low- and middle-income Asian countries will see the largest increase in cases, says the World Organisation Against Obesity.

USA-CHINA-RUSSIA

Washington has added 37 names to its trade blacklist. Hit by sanctions are entities that support the Russian and Chinese military, and contribute to human rights violations in China (and also in Myanmar).

INDIA

Narendra Modi's BJP won elections in Nagaland, Tripura and Meghalaya, three border states in the east of the country. Apart from Tripura, in the other two cases the premier's Hindu nationality party will govern in coalition with regional forces.

RUSSIA

According to calculations by the Washington-based Csis, the Russians have suffered more losses in the war in Ukraine than in all wars since 1945. At least 60-70 thousand dead soldiers and a summary figure of between 200 and 250 thousand dead and seriously wounded, at a rate of almost 6 thousand per month.

MONGOLIA

Hundreds of thousands of working animals have died due to Džut, the animal famine, caused by the formation of ice on pastureland. Some breeds are at the brink of exhaustion and others are in severe distress, causing the youngest and weakest animals to die, unable to reach the grass due to the blanket of snow and ice.
