Film legend Sarah Begum Kabori dies from COVID-19
A top-billed actress from the 1970s and 1980s, she is taken by the pandemic. Born into a Hindu family, she was also a member of the Awami League.
Dhaka (AsiaNews) – Actress and former lawmaker Sarah Begum Kabori died from COVID-19 at the age of 71. She was one of Bangladesh’s most revered silver screen stars.
In the 1970s and 1980s she became a legend, the “sweet girl” whose smile earned her the favour of millions of people.
Bangladeshi President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina led the nation in paying tribute to her. In 2008 she was also elected to parliament with the Awami League for the Narayanganj-4 constituency.
A two-time National Film Award winner, Sarah Begum Kabori was taken to Kurmitola General Hospital after testing positive for the SARS-CoV-2 virus on 5 April.
After her condition worsened, she was moved three days later to an intensive care unit at the Sheikh Russel Hospital where she died on Saturday.
Born Meena Pal in a Hindu family in Chittagong, she used the name Kabori in films. Married and divorced twice, she debuted on the big screen at 13 gaining huge popularity from many films in the 1970s and 1980s, most notably “Sujon Sokhi” and “Sareng Bou” alongside Farooque.
On screen she often teamed up with Razzak, but it was mainly the film “Devdas”, with Bulbul Ahmed, that won her critical acclaim.
