CHINA

A former student went on a stabbing spree at a vocational college in eastern China, killing eight people and injuring 17. The attack took place on Saturday at the Wuxi Vocational College of Arts and Technology in Yixing, part of the city of Wuxi in eastern Jiangsu province. The suspect, a 21-year-old man, was arrested. This comes just a few days after a car attack in Zhuhai, which claimed 35 lives, one of the deadliest in contemporary Chinese history.

SRI LANKA

The Sri Lankan President reappointed Harini Amarasuriya as Prime Minister. The leftist coalition won 159 seats in the 225-member parliament in the general election. The newly sworn-in cabinet has 22 ministries. Veteran Vijitha Herath was also reconfirmed as head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Dissanayake did not appoint a new finance minister during the swearing-in, signalling that he will keep the role himself, as he had done in September.

ISRAEL - LEBANON

An Israeli airstrike on a building in a central district of the Lebanese capital Beirut killed Hezbollah's spokesman yesterday. Both the Israel Defence Forces and Hezbollah confirmed that media relations chief Mohammed Afif was killed in the attack on the Ras al-Naba'a neighbourhood. On the same day, Israeli planes carried out at least 27 attacks against civilian and religious sites in Lebanon. One targeted the Church of Our Lady of Salvation, near Saint George's Hospital, in the Hadath area, south of Beirut.

PHILIPPINES

More than one million people have been evacuated since super typhoon Man-Yi, known locally as Pepito, made its second landfall on the Philippines' main island of Luzon, with forecasters warning of “life-threatening swells”, heavy rains and strong winds. Man-Yi is the sixth typhoon to hit the Philippines in a month, with at least 160 people known to have died in the previous five storms. It is the 16th of the year, with environmentalists calling for a climate emergency.

SINGAPORE

Lim Oon Kuin, 82-year-old founder of oil trading company Hin Leong Trading, was sentenced to 17 and a half years in prison in a case involving at least 1.7 million in fraud. The tycoon also known as OK Lim, had orchestrated one of the most serious business fraud cases in Singapore, prosecutors told the court. Lim faced more than 100 charges and contested them at trial, but was convicted of two counts of defrauding the Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (HSBC) and one count of aiding and abetting forgery.

RUSSIA

In this 2024, which had been proclaimed by Vladimir Putin as the ‘Year of the Family’, the number of divorces in Russia has risen exponentially, as can be seen from the registers of the Zags, the municipal registry offices for registering marriages, with 318,000 divorces compared to 360,000 marriages, mainly due to the introduction of large subsidies for single mothers.
