China, disgraced "security tsar" was a follower of a guru
Beijing (AsiaNews) - Zhou Yongkang, former "national security Tsar" recently sentenced to life in prison, was a follower of a healer, mystic and practitioner of traditional qigong. This was revealed by Xinhua, the official Chinese government news agency, which reports that Zhou handed over important state documents to this "guru”. Known as "the sage of Xinjiang", Cao Yongzheng is a renowned artist in Chinese society who - thanks to his "arts" – has managed to become a stakeholder in the domestic oil market.
China, still a formally atheist country, has been struggling to clamp down not only against traditional religions, but especially the large number of cults and para-religious groups that most often form around alleged gurus with miraculous powers. Cao is one of them. He emerged on the national scene in the nineties for his supposed ability to predict the future and cure diseases.
Cao’s "talents" have allowed him to reach the top political and economic leaders in the country, so much so that he has managed to create over time - along with a former senior executive of the China National Petroleum Corporation - a company engaged in the oil industry based in Hong Kong.
The same Cao, reports Xinhua, testified against Zhou Yongkang during a closed hearing that took place on 22 May 2015. In his statement he admitted that the former member of the Politburo - the highest ranking official in the recent history of country to go to jail – passed on five "highly confidential" documents and other "confidential" documents to him. These texts, the agency concludes, "should not end up in hands other than his own. This is a direct violation of the Law on State Secrets ".
