Cautious optimism on the resumption of Iranian nuclear talks
Geneva (AsiaNews
/ Agencies) - There is cautious optimism today in Geneva over a resuption of negotiations
on the Iranian nuclear issue. This is due
to the new course of relations with Iran in the initial stages of the Rouhani Presidency.
The
talks include the Islamic Republic and the other the "5 +1" , the
five members of the Security Council (United States, Russia, China, Britain and
France) plus Germany. The meetings
follow Rouhani's visit to New
York - and phone call with Obama - and the resumption of contact with the
"5 +1" last month, after the total failure of the previous round of
talks , held in April in Kazakhstan.
Westerners
basically put on the table the proposed suspension of sanctions as long as
Tehran accepts limitations and controls.
The
Iranian side are announcing a proposal , as yet undisclosed , but regarding
which the deputy foreign minister and number two in the negotiating team ,
Abbas Araghci , spoke to the official IRNA news of " six months "
needed for a comprehensive agreement, " if there is good will. "
The
Americans are particularly pushing for an agreement, and in recent days have
also reassured Israel, which still does not believe in the good faith of
Tehran. Yesterday
, Prime Minister Netanyahu reiterated that making concessions to the Iranians
would be a " historic mistake ."
No
one expects the conclusion of an agreement in these two days of meetings, but
the Iranian Foreign Minister , Javad Zarif said he hoped that on Wednesday there
will be talk of a roadmap .
