Card. Toppo: The government does not protect Christians from Hindu radicals
Ranchi (AsiaNews) - "It is too early to judge the work of the Prime Minister with regards the Christian minority. What is certain, however, and there are elements now in power that have long relied totally on Hindu Rashtra, a Hindu nation ". Speaking to AsiaNews Card. Telesphore Toppo, Archbishop of Ranchi (Jharkhand), comments on the attacks and discrimination that Christians continue to face in some parts of India.
"India - said the prelate - is a great country, what happens in certain areas does not always have repercussions in others. Certainly it is not easy for government to manage everything".
According to Card. Toppo, the country has "a wonderful Constitution, which gives full freedom to practice and propagate one’s religion. The Prime Minister spoke in its defense, saying that he would comply with what is stipulated by the Charter. It is the only public statement made by him on the subject, but it is important that he said it".
Recently the US Commission on International Religious Freedom released a report on the situation in the subcontinent, which showed an increase in attacks and verbal violence against religious minorities since Narendra Modi came to power. A position shared by the Church and social activists.
