COVID-19 cases on the rise due to Chinese immigrants

An outbreak was reported in a bar in Vĩnh Phúc province. People tested positive after coming into contact with Chinese. Yesterday 35 new cases were reported. The authorities are on alert, but official figures are far from what is seen in countries like India.

Hanoi (AsiaNews) – Coronavirus cases are rising again in Vietnam due to illegal immigrants, mainly from China, this according to Vietnamese authorities.

An outbreak was reported yesterday in a karaoke bar in Vĩnh Phúc province, involving nine people, six members of the staff and three customers .

According to the local health department, the people infected at the Sunny Bar had come into contact with Chinese who later tested positive.

The provincial authorities found 52 people who had entered illegally from China. A few days ago, the authorities in Hanoi found another 62, living in various city districts, like Cầu Giất, Nam Từ Liêm, and Hà Đông.

Urgent preventive measures have been taken at all levels, said Đặnhg Quang Tấn, director of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Vietnam’s Health Ministry.

Although rising, official figures are far from the tragic levels seen in countries like India.

Yesterday, Vietnamese health authorities reported 35 new cases. Over the last week, the daily average was 24. In total, Vietnam has had 155,000 cases with 3,240 deaths.

In addition to the 14 cases in Vĩnh Phúc, the other most affected province is Hà Nam (16 cases). More have been reported in Hanoi, Hưng Yên province, Đà Nẵng, Hồ Chi Minh City, and Yên Bái province.
