Beijing still not congratulating Joe Biden
Unlike other countries, Beijing is waiting. Chinese leaders are cautious not to give the impression of interfering in US internal affairs. Russia too has not yet complimented Biden. The EU calls on Biden to form a common front against China.
Beijing (AsiaNews) – The Chinese government has not yet congratulated Joe Biden on his victory in the US presidential elections of 3 November.
Unlike other countries, China has bucked the trend and not sent a congratulatory message to the Democratic Party candidate
For China’s leaders, it is not yet the “right” time to compliment Biden since the incumbent, President Donald Trump, has gone to court to challenge the outcome of the vote.
Carefully weighing its words, China’s Foreign Ministry said on Monday that it has “taken note of Biden declaring victory”.
According to some Chinese analysts, growing tensions with Washington are pushing China to be cautious about the final outcome of the US election in order to avoid accusations of interfering in US internal affairs.
Russia seems to share this attitude. the Kremlin has yet to congratulate Biden. In any event, Moscow probably preferred to see Trump re-elected.
Conversely, many US allies in Europe were quick to congratulate the president-elect.
EU Foreign Affairs Chief Josep Borrell on Monday said that Biden's election could open a new chapter in relations between Europe and the United States.
In his view, the two sides of the Atlantic can now share a steadier and coherent position on China, especially over its unfair trading practices and the threats it poses to international security.
