Beijing (AsiaNews / Agencies) - An electronic medical certificate that is mutually recognized by other countries, in which vaccination against Covid-19 is being proposed by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

His suggestion was revealed two days ago during a press conference on the side-lines of the National People’s Assembly (NPC).

The proposal aims to overcome the severe restrictions implemented so far in the country for all those who travel or come from abroad. At present there are strict border controls, refusal of entry for people from countries at risk, mandatory quarantine for anyone entering China.

Wang Yi said his country will push for electronic passports to confirm people's health status, and for such documents to be mutually recognized between states, with possible test checks.

The foreign minister also said that China is willing to open regional vaccination centres in other countries to allow inoculation of the vaccine for Chinese living abroad.

According to Guo Weimin, spokesman for the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference, which is held simultaneously with the NPC, the country had administered 52 million doses as of February 28. At the same time, China exported its vaccine to 28 countries, and distributed it as a gift to 69 other countries.

According to epidemiologist Zhong Nanshan, China plans to vaccinate at least 40% of its population by June.
