Bartholomew holds summit on theological preparation and ecological awareness
Participants will hear important environmental (Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant) theologians and discuss how ecological awareness can be fostered and promoted in Orthodox institutions of higher education in the world through courses and other programmes related to the protection of creation.
Istanbul (AsiaNews) – An international summit opened today in Halki (pictured), Turkey on ‘Theological Formation and Ecological Awareness’.
The event will run until 4 June, bringing together some 50 delegates from over 40 institutions from around the world.
Called by the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew, the third Halki Summit is organized as an inter-Orthodox working conference.
Participants will hear major environmental (Orthodox, Catholic and Protestant) theologians and discuss how ecological awareness can be fostered and promoted in Orthodox institutions of higher education in the world through courses and other programmes related to the protection of creation.
The ultimate goal is to promote environmental awareness in the core curricula of theological institutions by upholding the spirit of dialogue and exchange already expressed in the two previous summits, as well as to reflect the long-standing concern of the Ecumenical Patriarchate for environmental protection and related initiatives of more than thirty years.
The first two Halki summits brought together activists and scientists, journalists and business leaders, theologians and academics, to work across different disciplines.
Halki I was held in June 2012 and focused on ‘Global responsibility and environmental sustainability". Halki II was held in June 2015 and brought together activists and experts from around the world in an conversation on the environment, literature and the arts.
