At a conference on Egypt's future, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates offer the al-Sisi administration 4 billion each. Held Amid tight security in Sharm el-Sheikh, the meeting brought together heads of governments and international organisations to promote regional development. Egypt hopes for US$ 60 billion in capital investments in 36 major projects.

Cairo (AsiaNews) - The governments of Saudi Arabia, UAE and Kuwait have announced plans to offer 4 billions of dollars each in aid to Egypt so that it can develop in peace and security. The three countries made the pledge at a conference currently underway amid tight security in the Egyptian resort town of Sharm el-Sheikh.

After Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi's opening address, the Saudi crown prince and the Emir of Kuwait pledged US$ 4 billion each. The prime minister of the United Arab Emirates made the same offer soon after.

Saudi Arabia's late King Abdullah was behind the conference. In the summer of 2014, he proposed an international forum to help Egypt get back on its feet.

The conference in Sharm El-Sheikh brought together scores of heads of state and government, as well as representatives from the International Monetary Fund, World Bank, European Union, Arab League and African Union.

The Egyptian government offered its potential partners the opportunity to sign up for 36 large-scale projects in various sectors worth some US$ 60 billion. Egypt hopes that donors could provide "at least 65 per cent" of the money.
