Anti-extradition movement: over a quarter of more than 10 thousand arrested on trial
2,068 charged, including leaders of the democracy movement. 715 so far convicted. Just over 500 have been released on bail or under surveillance. More than 1,700 of the defendants are under the age of 18: 115 have been sentenced.
Hong Kong (AsiaNews/Agencies) – Hong Kong’s judicial authority has indicted more than a quarter of the 10,260 citizens arrested in connection with the anti-extradition protests.This is what emerges from official data on arrests that took place between June 2019 and April this year.
Among the indicted are the most important figures on the pro-democracy front, such as Jimmy Lai, Lee Cheuk-yan, Benny Tai, Albert Ho and Joshua Wong. Many of them await trial in custody.
Of the 2,608 arrested who went to trial, 750 are accused of causing unrest. The other main charges are illegal assembly, assault, injury, arson, damage and obstructing police.
The judges have so far sentenced 715 defendants; 277 have been released from prison on caution. Charges have been dropped for 51 people, while 224 were granted bail.
More than 1,700 of those arrested are under the age of 18: 115 received a sentence; 25 were released on bail.
