An orchestra for orphans with the Missionaries of Charity in Ho Chi Minh City
Called WYO4Children, the project was launched at the home of the Sisters of Mother Teresa in Binh Duong. The World Youth Orchestra Foundation directed by Maestro Damiano Giuranna is behind the initiative designed to promote the growth of abandoned children by teaching them music.
Ho Chi Minh City (AsiaNews) – Promoting the growth of orphans and abandoned children in Ho Chi Minh City through music is the goal of the WYO4Children project, launched by the World Youth Orchestra (WYO) Foundation directed by Conductor Damiano Giuranna and supported by the Missionaries of Charity in Binh Duong who have made their facility available an hour from the
“An ambitious project like WYO4Children can only take shape if it manages to create solid links with local social support,” said Giuranna. “The support of the Missionaries of Charity in Bin Duong, whom we thank, is precious because it makes the local community an active part of this initiative.”
The project includes weekly lessons for 80 boys and girls aged 5 to 17, who will have the opportunity to learn the first rudiments of music, and play classical and traditional Vietnamese instruments. A community choir is also planned.
The initiative, which is part of the broader Sounds of Brotherhood project (thanks to the support of the CDP Foundation and the contribution of LCA Studio Legale) kicked off on 27 January and will continue until September 2024. The first year of activity will be in Vietnam and then continue in Southeast Asia for another two years.
“After successful initiatives in countries like Iran, Israel, Palestine, Morocco, Lebanon, the United States, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Bulgaria, the World Youth Orchestra Foundation arrives in Southeast Asia, a land of ancient civilisations,” said WYO Foundation president Adolfo Vannucci.
"Faithful to its mission, WYO seeks out and promotes local cultural traditions, giving life to artistic experiences that link tradition to the present, nurturing education, social life and personal growth,” he added.
Five young Vietnamese teachers are involved in WYO4Children thanks to Father Dominic Nguyen, a Vietnamese Catholic priest who contributed to their selection.
The teachers' coordinator, Hoang Vu, will train and direct the choir; his four colleagues will teach guitar, percussion, piano, and violin.
The project includes recitals and small concerts every two months and a final event in September, which will allow children to share their experience (musical and otherwise) while boosting the bonds with the community that hosts them.
