Afghanistan: local governor dies in, mosque bombing
Kabul ( AsiaNews / Agencies) - This morning, a bomb
exploded outside a mosque in the Lagar province , southern Afghanistan ,
killing the local governor and seriously injuring 15 people. When
the explosion occurred the victim , Arsala Jamal (see photo) , had stopped to
greet some of the faithful at the end of the prayer for Eid al -Adha , the
Feast of Sacrifice celebrated every year during the Hajj ( pilgrimage to Mecca ) .
So
far no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. However,
it is known that - as in most of the rural areas of the country - the Taliban
are taking over control in the area.
The
mosque is located in Puli Alam , the capital of Kagar , and is the largest in
the province . Arsal Jamal was
elected governor in April. In the past, he had
ruled the province of Khost . The
attack takes place a few days after the arrest of Latif Mehsud, a Taliban leader
in Pakistan by the U.S. military. Official
sources said he is be a close friend of Hakimullah Mehsud , at the head of the Pakistani Taliban .
