Ma Ying-jeou re-elected
The Kuomintang candidate beat his challenger, Tsai Ing-wen, by a margin of 51 to 45.7 per cent. Ma had staked his re-election on his overture with mainland China.
Taipei (AsiaNews/ Agencies) – President Ma Ying-jeou declared victory in Taiwan’s election. With more than 95 per cent of precincts reporting, the Kuomintang (KMT) Party candidate led by 51 per cent against his main challenger, Tsai Ing-wen, who won 45.7 per cent of the vote as the Democratic Progressive Party candidate.
“This isn’t a personal victory, this is a victory for the Taiwan people,” Ma said. “Through this victory, the people have given me a sign to continue with my policies.”
Ma’s victory is an affirmation of his effort to improve Taiwan’s relationship with China after years of strained ties under his DPP predecessor and previous Kuomintang governments.
Executives in Taiwan’s biggest companies backed the winner. They have been the main beneficiaries of his policies, including a 2010 trade agreement with China, which boosted investment on the island and the mainland.
