Zhejiang: police charge thousands of demonstrators calling for help after typhoon
Hangzhou (
AsiaNews ) - The government of the eastern province of Zhejiang has sent armed
troops to stop the demonstrations of the population of Yuyao , where about 4
thousand people gathered outside the town hall to protest against insufficient relief
measures to support people affected by the passage typhoon Fitow . The
typhoon that
hit China on October 8 , devastated thousands of houses and killed dozens
of people.
The
protesters (see photo) tore down the "Serve the People" logo written
in huge characters with the handwriting of Mao Zedong, which is located in
front of nearly all government buildings in the country. In
the evening, the police surrounded the square where the crowd had gathered and
charged on all those the present : the photographs taken on the spot and
circulated on the internet showed hundreds of officers in riot gear beating
protesters . Some
seem to have serious head injuries .
According
to local people , the government did not intervene in a timely manner after the
passage of the typhoon , which caused damage to 12.4 billion yuan (about 1
billion Euro) . The
photographs posted online show corpses floating in the flooded streets Yuyao
city . The
comments were demanding the government to intervene but , according to a local
resident, " the only thing they did was arrest those who protested on the
internet. At least 57 my friends have gone to jail".
