Msgr. Sanchez Sorondo: China, the best implementer of the social doctrine of the Church

The chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences, back from a trip to Beijing, exalts China as a country where the "common good" is the primary value; where "there are no slums" or drugs, where the environment is respected. Not like the United States of Donald Trump. "Many meeting points" between China and the Vatican.

Rome (AsiaNews) - "Right now, those who are best implementing the social doctrine of the Church are the Chinese". This was stated by Msgr. Marcelo Sánchez Sorondo, chancellor of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences.

In an interview published in the February 2 Spanish edition of Vatican Insider the Argentine bishop lists all the wonders that he noted on his last trip to China: "They hold the common good above all else, everything else comes second to the common good".

"I met an extraordinary China: what people don’t realise is that the central value in China is work, work, work. There’s no other way, fundamentally it is like St Paul said: he who doesn’t work, doesn’t eat".

"You do not have shantytowns, you do not have drugs, young people do not take drugs”. Instead, there is a “positive national conscience".

According to Msgr. Sanchez Sorondo, Beijing "is defending the dignity of the person", following Pope Francis’ encyclical "Laudato sì", more than other countries defending the Paris agreements on climate.

In this, China stands out from the United States: "The economy does not dominate politics, as happens in the United States, as the Americans themselves say. How is it possible for oil multinationals to influence (Donald) Trump? Knowing that all this hurts the earth, as the encyclical and scientists say. Liberal thought has dismissed the concept of the common good, it does not even want to take it into account, it states that it is an empty idea, without any benefits. On the contrary, the Chinese, no, they propose work and the common good ".

"The impression - he concludes - is that China is evolving very well. They asked me about relations between China and the Vatican, I replied that at right now there are no formalities because we do not have ambassadors or nuncios, but  there are many points of agreement. The world is dynamic and evolving. You can not think that today's China is the China of the days of John Paul II or Russia of the Cold War ".

Msgr. Sanchez Sorondo is not new to praise for China. In February 2017, at an international meeting on organ trafficking, he defended Beijing against the charge of forced transplants operated by Chinese doctors on prisoners and death row inmates.
