Korea, Caritas will continue "in every way" to help its' neighbours in difficulty

by Theresa Kim Hwa-young

Marking " Day for Oversees Aid",  the president of Caritas Korea underlines: "Love of  God and our Christian faith must be shown through acts of solidarity and  love for  our brothers".

Seoul (AsiaNews) – "Whoever Loves God Must Also Love His Brother". This is the title of the message written by Msgr Lazzaro You Heung-sik, Bishop of Daejeon and President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Korea's Committee for "Caritas Korea,"  to mark "Day for Oversees Aid".

For the period from 1993 to 2002, Caritas has carried out over 332 programs and projects in the world; the bishop's Conference has decided to involve North Korea in the list of  projects of Caritas Internationalis.

In answer to the criticism that asks "Why assist overseas people when there are so many poor around us", Msgr. You underlines that  "however all human beings are children of God, so we are all brothers and sisters, this is the reason why we have to help overseas people".

"Overseas aid– adds the prelate – is Christian mission based on evangelical fraternity". "Love is" Msgr You says "the tie uniting human beings with God, the world and other people." and added, "Love for God and faith must be demonstrated through acts of sharing, accompanied by love for neighbours and all creation".

"The world – continues Bishop You - now produces enough food to feed everyone living; however, 40 percent of edible grain is used as livestock feed in richer countries for richer people, while more than one billion people are in hunger. Every day 24,000 people are dying of hunger and malnutrition in the world".

"Caritas Korea, in the name of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Korea, - he concluded - will make every effort to help needy neighbours in other countries, because it is beyond the capacity of any single individual".
