Chinese representative in Macao commits suicide
Zheng Xiaosong, 59, jumped from the top story of his residence. For the government "he suffered from depression". In recent years, due to the anti-corruption campaign, many Chinese bureaucrats have committed suicide. Tomorrow he was due to take part in the inauguration of the new mega-bridge between Zhuhai, Macao and Hong Kong.
Macau (AsiaNews) - The head of the Chinese representative office in Macao, Zheng Xiaosong, died yesterday morning, after jumping from the top floor of his apartment building. The Hong Kong and Macao Business Office in Beijing released a statement explaining that Zheng had been suffering from depression for some time.
The representative office (more precisely: Liaison Office), guarantees relations between the central government and the autonomous administrations of Macao and Hong Kong, influencing local politics.
Zheng, 59, had become director of the office last year, also joining the Central Committee of the Party.
The Beijing office statement is very sober in details and does not explain Zheng's condition before his death. It states that some representatives were sent to Macao to express their condolences to the family.
In recent years, hundreds of government bureaucracy personalities have committed suicide following involvement in the violent anti-corruption campaign launched by Xi Jinping. At present there is no evidence that Zheng was involved in any investigation.
The possibility of being accused of corruption, being dismissed and condemned is seriously weakening the reserve of official representatives, even those in high offices. Some psychoanalysts have confirmed to AsiaNews that among the members of the Party, even at a high level, psychosis and anxieties are widespread, including isolation, lack of trust in their collaborators, sleep disorders.
The Liaison office in Macao announced that the day before his death Zheng had met representatives of a think tank in his office. Tomorrow he was to have attended the inauguration of the new mega-bridge linking Zhuhai, in Guangdong, Macao and Hong Kong.
